Jehanne d’Arc
I am sitting beneath Joan of Arc. She is proudly holding her sword toward the heavens, while her Stallion carries her into battle. Anna Vaughn Hyatt sculpted Joan’s image in 1915 and John Van Pelt was the architect. Jehanne d’Arc was born in France on January 6, 1411 and then burned at the stake in Rouen France on May 30, 1431. She was 20 years old. What crusades have I led that are worthy of marble recognition? What battles have I fought that will be remembered in 500 years? I sit here on this last day of March, humbled, inspired and compelled to move forward with the courage and the strength of Joan. Today, I salute all the women in my life who have conquered their fears and followed their dreams quietly, sometimes even sacrificing them. I will remember your courage and your spirit.
